My summer reading list: Christina Legler

Christina Legler
Fiction, incoming

My interests are pretty eclectic, so there’s a wide variety of books on my summer reading list.

Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf – I actually haven’t read much of Woolf’s works, so I thought this would be a good place to start. I thoroughly enjoy works of literature set around WWI. English literature has always been a bit of a challenge for me, so here’s to stepping out of my comfort zone.

Big Fish by Daniel Wallace – I’m a lover of all things whimsical and I just adore the movie adaptation by Tim Burton. The tall tales, the tears, the father-son relationship—all of it leaves me wanting more. I figure it’s time to finally delve into the source material.

Wise Blood by Flannery O’Connor – I love to hate O’Connor’s characters. Having only scratched the surface with her short stories, I’m looking forward to reading her first novel.

The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly – I recently read A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness after seeing trailers for the movie adaptation. The book left me choking on sobs with tears streaming down my cheeks. I needed another book saturated in the same dose of fantasy and reality. Lost Things looks like a close hit.

Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury – Deprived of a decent reading selection in my high school years almost a decade ago, I never had many encounters with Bradbury. The blend of darkness, fantasy, and reality in this classic novel has lured me in. Perhaps, however, I will save this one for Halloween …
