Meet J. J. Hernandez. He studies poetry in the Fresno State MFA program. For his poem “Praise Break,” he received an honorable mention from the AWP Intro Journals Project, a national competition for the discovery and publication of the best new works by creative writing students. He serves a graduate artist in the Laureate Lab Visual Wordlist Studio, studying with Juan Felipe Herrera; in 2016 he was named the program’s C. G. Hanzlicek Poetry Writing Fellow; and in 2015 he received the Andrés Montoya Memorial Scholarship. J. J. serves as Senior Associate Poetry Editor for The Normal School literary magazine, as well as the Poetry Editor for Razorhouse, an online magazine.
